There is a notable difficulty in linking different struggles, even when the adversary is the same: imperialism. From Gaza to Bogotá, passing through Caracas, San Salvador, Rome, Brussels, or Ankara, we observe how social movements tend to atomize into single-issue militancies, with serious difficulties in establishing connections among them and aiming for coordinated and more ambitious goals.

It is true that the brutality experienced in Gaza generates enormous empathy, as it could not be otherwise. But it is also true that what happens in Gaza is reproduced elsewhere in the world, adapted to the tolerance of each society and the level of resistance that the oppressor encounters. The threshold of tolerance for the suffering of Arab or Black African peoples in Europe and North America is outrageously high, especially when compared to what these same societies could endure on their own territories. What happens in Gaza could happen in any country at any moment, even if the distraction in which our societies live makes this option seem remote or impossible.

However, this threshold of tolerance for suffering in the West is being tested. Over the past two years, we have seen that the life of a Palestinian, in the global human rights market, has virtually no value to our societies. Neither governments, nor the press, nor much of public opinion have acted in accordance with the magnitude of the suffering inflicted on the population of Gaza. Similarly, the lives of Western citizens killed by the empire or its allies are increasingly worth less and generate less resonance in our societies.

At the same time, the margins of repression in the West are expanding—not only against those who demonstrate in solidarity with Palestine, such as in Belgium or Germany, but also against other sectors of society based on origin, skin color, or sexual orientation. The rise of far-right ideas, amplified by Elon Musk’s social media platforms and by media acting as conduits of economic power, is no accident. These ideas, and their executing arms—political parties, pressure groups, or social movements—have ceased to be marginal, becoming tools of cultural struggle against diverse societies, deeply guided by human rights and the rule of law.

Added to this is a culture of dehumanization of the “other”: gays, trans people, Muslims, Jews, Black people, Latinos, immigrants, the poor… Between dehumanization, economic power, and industrial and technological backing, a real power is consolidating on the streets, supported by governments and by a “normal” society that accepts events uncritically. If one stopped to think, one would tremble with fear for what our children might face.

Technologies and devices used with extreme violence against the Palestinian population are applied more “conservatively” in the United States, as part of the persecution of immigrants promoted by the Trump administration. One example is drones from the American company Skydio: bombing in Gaza while performing identification tasks in the U.S.

In the last two years, the expansion of repressive margins in the West, without effective opposition to stop them, and the increasing cruelty of Israel against Gaza, have gone hand in hand—not just metaphorically. Israel has set the limit of how far a savage capitalism with supremacist ambitions can go, creating a dangerous precedent before the complacency of the international community, which, despite having resources to intervene, has chosen to look away.

At the other end of the world, the United States is moving toward a country for whites and by whites, with growing but clearly insufficient opposition. Using Israeli technology and expanding the military presence in various cities, first against immigrants and potentially tomorrow against other sectors, the goal is to maintain the MAGA agenda through control, segregation, and repression without mercy. The narrative of Trump and Netanyahu toward their detractors is the same: they are animals, trash, disposable beings—useful only in their dehumanization to consolidate bases and dull the population.

Canada is also not exempt. Under Mark Carney’s administration, it has benefited from the sale of Israeli weaponry used in the Palestinian genocide, while pressured by the U.S. military industry, it has launched disproportionate military budgets while cutting social programs that could benefit the majority. In this context, the Canadian Prime Minister acts as a humiliated figure before the “bully” to the south, even if it means suffering for his own people.

In this context, where the global narrative and practice are shaped by Israel and the United States, with weak opposition from BRICS countries and other less influential non-aligned nations, a trend of open and transparent war against citizens is emerging. What happens in Gaza represents the greater evil; what occurs in the United States, the lesser evil, although it could intensify at any moment, raising the threshold of suffering against whomever and whenever it suits, aiming to divide society and create scapegoats while stock markets and their participants grow richer.

It would be extremely shortsighted not to see that the world under construction could be even worse than the one dreamed of and executed by the genocidal Adolf Hitler. He occupied Europe; Trump and Netanyahu, for now, control the Maghreb, Europe, the United States, the Middle East—excluding Iran—and the Southern Cone of Latin America. Strong against the weak, humiliated before the powerful. Trump’s trade war against China showed that China seems the only country with real capacity to confront U.S. imperialism. The expansion of the empire continues, and it can only be stopped from within.
